About the Designer:
At the age of five, Melissa Baswell began creating
clothing for her dolls using a needle and thread. While
a student at University of Wisconsin-Madison, she
spent her free time as an Environmental Education
intern, and/or locked in her apartment making
recycled art and reworking vintage fashion into
renewed garments.
Well before "eco-fashion"
became an everyday term, her focus was to create eco-friendly clothing that was
also fashion forward.
Today, Baswell is recognized as a sustainable fashion
industry leader, and serves as the
head designer of her Chicago-based
Mountains
of the Moon
fashion
label. By pairing vintage-inspired timelessness with
clean, modern lines and elegant detailing, she
creates fresh, feminine pieces that translate into
treasured wardrobe staples. |
Called
"standouts for their
unassuming elegance, dreamy palette and unabashed
femininity" by the Discovery Channel's
TreeHugger.com, Melissa Baswell's designs have been featured in
publications worldwide (Women's Wear
Daily, Business Week, Boho Magazine,
Design*Sponge, EcoSalon, Second City, Style, and many others), have
shown at Chicago and Portland Fashion
Weeks, and have been
exhibited multiple times at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art. Baswell was
also chosen to re-design Clara's costume for the Joffrey Ballet's famous Nutcracker.
Her collections are available at select boutiques
throughout the U.S., Canada, Japan, Australia,
Sweden and the U.K.
In addition to her work with Mountains of the Moon,
Melissa Baswell is an illustrator and designer for
Bubby and Bean, and a
blogger for the
creative living
blog of the same name. She also works with several bands, events, and
photographers in the
music industry as a fashion stylist and eco-fashion show producer. Her
clients include Umphrey's McGee, moe., the Dead, Rothbury Music Festival,
Summer Camp Music Festival, SCI Fidelity Records,
CID Entertainment, Madison House Presents, and Jay
Blakesberg Photography.
