Sustainability is defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”  At Mountains of the Moon, this means doing our part to make a positive impact on the earth and its inhabitants, through a combination of eco-friendly design, sweatshop-free labor, and all around green business practices. We work to become a part of the solution, rather than adding to the problem.

Exactly how do we do this?

Mountains of the Moon creates clothing with
the conscious + stylish in mind - those of us who care about the environment and fair labor practices who also want to look good in what we wear.  From start to finish, our garments are designed, patterned, manufactured, dyed (using low impact dyes), and tagged (using eco-friendly materials) in the USA in small, 100% sweatshop-free facilities that are family owned and operated.

We also choose to use eco-friendly fabrics that
are known for durability and long-life (click here for more information on our fabrics). By selecting fabrics that are not only grown and processed using sustainable methods but that also last longer than conventional fabrics, we are able to produce clothing with longer lifecycles than the average garment.
We opt to create pieces that are fashion-forward but also timeless for the same reason: Designs that are stylish but that can also be worn for multiple seasons and that surpass short-lived fads and trends are less likely to end up in landfills.  In August 2010, we introduced the Rediscovered Collection on our retail website, which offers gently worn recycled and vintage fashion, in an effort to bring new life to discarded but beautiful garments.  Our eco-friendly art features recycled, reused, and reclaimed materials.

We ship our orders using reused packing materials or USPS boxes that are cradle-to-cradle certified for ecologically-intelligent design, and use recycled, tree-free and biodegradable office supplies.

Mountains of the Moon also makes regular donations, both monetary and in clothing, to several organizations, including American Forests, Carbon Fund, Oxfam, Conscious Alliance, the International Tibet Independence Movement, the Red Door Animal Shelter, the Organic School Project, and others.  We also participate in events like Green Apple and organize benefits with non-profits like Climate Cycle, where we work to raise awareness of environmental issues and responsible design by giving guests the opportunity to learn while enjoying fashion and art.
All in all, we practice what we preach, strive to be green in every aspect of our company, and live by our motto:
smart. sustainable. style.

About Our Eco-Friendly Fabrics

Hemp is the ultimate eco-friendly fiber.  Hemp fabric is one of the longest-lasting and most resilient fabrics, becomes softer with time without breaking down, and grows well naturally without the need for pesticides.

Organic Cotton is grown on land that has been free of chemical pesticides and fertilizers for at least three years, and is incredibly soft against the skin.  (Conventional cotton accounts for one-half of the world’s pesticide use).

Tencel is biodegradable fiber made through an ecologically responsible process from the cellulose found in wood pulp, from trees grown on responsibly managed farms.  We use tencel fabrics that are blended with hemp for the most luxurious feel and flattering drape.
